When I moved to Reno in 2009, it wasn’t for the mountains, the trails, or even the running. It was for a business opportunity—one far outside the fitness industry. Reno, at the time, was in a tough spot. The Great Recession had hit the area hard. Foreclosures were at an all-time high, and the unemployment rate was among the worst in the country. Coming from Golden, Colorado, it was a bit of a shock. But despite the economic struggles, something about this place grabbed me.
What I discovered almost immediately was a dreamland for anyone who loves being outside. I was blown away by the accessibility of trails. Whether you wanted to run flat, climb into the mountains, or hit a mix of road and dirt, it was all here. Even better, you could run and cycle almost year-round—something that’s rare in a four-season climate.
Then there was the skiing. World-class. And let’s not forget the lakes—Donner and, of course, the jewel of the Sierra, Lake Tahoe. Honestly, I had found my version of paradise.
As my business career took shape in 2009 and 2010, my personal life did too. I met my wife, Aimee, and as we started building a life together, the idea for a running store began to take shape. Coming from Colorado, I had a few connections in the industry. I reached out, asked for advice, and the feedback was promising. So, in 2011, we opened the first Reno Running Company store at the Summit Mall.
From day one, our mission was clear: Helping people achieve their active lifestyle goals. Whether someone was training for Boston, preparing for their very first 5K, or just needed a comfortable pair of shoes for being on their feet all day—we wanted everyone to feel welcome.
The support from the community was amazing. We were able to grow, opening two more stores in the Reno-Tahoe area, and eventually expanding into Northern California, just over the Sierras. It’s been a dream come true.
But maybe the most rewarding part of this journey has been exploring this incredible region with our community—longtime locals, new residents, and out-of-town visitors. I truly believe Reno is becoming an outdoor Mecca. And I’m not alone in thinking that. Just take a look at two recent features—one by Reno Tahoe and another by Running Lifestyle City Guides—spotlighting our region as a destination for outdoor lovers.
One of our ongoing goals is to help Reno be known as the most active community in America. And I think we’re well on our way.
See you out there,
