DESCRIPTION:Please join the Rotary Club of Reno Centennial Sunset and Immunize Nevada for a fun 5K walk/run & 10K run at Washoe County’s Rancho San Rafael Park on Saturday\, May 5th\, 2018 – runners and walkers are all invited! The race begins at 10 am with late registration from 8-9:30 am. Packet pickup will be on Friday the 4th at Reno Running Company at the Summit Reno from 3-6 pm. With registration you will receive a cool max t-shirt\, a state of the art timing system service that will text message instant results\, refreshments/beer (please bring ID)\, local business exhibits\, professional photography\, and a fun time for the whole family!\nThe proceeds of the run will go to the Rotary Foundations Polio Plus Fund\, the RCS Rotary Foundation Inc. and Immunize Nevada. \nRotary\, along with our partners\, has reduced polio cases by 99 percent worldwide since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. We are close to eradicating polio\, but we need your help! \nWhy Purple Pinkie? Every time a child is immunized\, their pinkies are colored purple to show that they are safe from this crippling and deadly disease. Now with new reports of polio amongst the refugees\, it continues to be of importance to help us fight.  The polio cases represented by the remaining one percent are the most difficult to prevent\, due to factors including geographical isolation\, poor public infrastructure\, armed conflict and cultural barriers. For every runner and walker who the leprechaun passes\, the leprechaun’s pot of gold will grow in size. Who will benefit from the increased pot of gold? The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum (The Discovery)\, who is Race178’s non profit partner in the event. \nThe first 6 years of this event Race178 has made a large donation to the Discovery Museum: $5\,000 each year. SUMMARY:2nd Annual Ryan Volker and Rose Scarpa Memorial Scholarship 5k Ninja Run
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of The Second Annual Ninja Run is to continue the legacy and to honor two remarkable young people: Rose Scarpa and Ryan Volker\, who were killed in an automobile accident before they could start their lives together. \nThe first thing Rose ever wanted to be was a ninja and she worked hard toward that goal\, earning a blue belt in Kung Fu by age ten and a gold belt in Tae Kwon Do at 22. One of her favorite past times was watching Kung Fu movies with her mom.  As she grew up\, she discovered a love of cooking and pursued this goal with equal vigor; graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley and becoming a professional chef. \nWhile cooking at the Atlantis in Reno\, she met and fell in love with Ryan\, who was also a chef.  As a child Ryan and his brothers loved the “Ninja Turtles” and since their single Dad walked with a cane as did the Ninjas’ master\, they christened themselves the Turtles. Upon Ryan and Roses’ passing\, the three remaining brothers got matching Ninja Turtle tattoos. This is how the ninja theme originated. \nRose and Ryan were leaving for Oregon on the first leg of a trip to cook around the world when they were killed swerving to avoid a deer. Ryan was planning to propose to Rose upon their return. \nThis run is in their honor and to raise money so some deserving culinary student can obtain a scholarship to the Culinary Institute of America to continue Rose and Ryan’s dream.
